Optimise an Etsy listing for the search engine that actually ranks it
An Etsy SEO prompt that works to the field limits on your listing form, writes titles for a phone screen, and never invents a tag your item does not match.

Most Etsy SEO prompts are Google SEO prompts with the word Etsy pasted in. They talk about meta descriptions on a platform that has none, invent tag limits from memory, and fill every slot because filling slots feels like work. The prompt below takes the limits from your own listing form, writes the title for a phone screen rather than a crawler, and is allowed to leave a tag empty when nothing honest fits it.
Etsy is a different search engine
Etsy ranks listings with its own system, using fields that exist nowhere else. Titles, tags, attributes and categories are the surface, and Etsy also weighs how a listing performs once shoppers see it, according to its own seller handbook.
That last part is why filling tag slots with near misses backfires. A tag that pulls in someone who looks and leaves has spent a slot and taught the platform something unflattering about the listing. On a website a bad keyword costs you an impression. On a marketplace it costs you the impression and a data point.
The limits belong to your form, not to an article
Copy the tag count and the title limit from the listing editor in front of you. Etsy publishes its guidance and then revises it, most recently with new advice on writing titles, and any number quoted in a blog post is a snapshot of the day it was written.
This is why rule 1 forbids the model from assuming a limit. A confidently wrong character count produces copy that will not save, and a confidently wrong tag count produces three tags you invented to reach a total. Paste what the form shows and the problem disappears.
What the model genuinely cannot see
It cannot see Etsy search results, your competitors, your conversion rate or your shop history. There is no public source of Etsy search volume, so any number a model gives you for one was generated rather than measured.
What it is good at is the part that is text: saying what the item is in the first few words, spotting the four tags that are the same idea, and telling you which facts are missing. The words your buyers used in reviews and messages are the closest thing to real search data you own, which is why the prompt asks for them by name.
If you also sell the same products from your own domain, that page is the only asset here you control. Check it carries a real product entity with the structured data checker, and see whether an assistant could lift an answer from it with the AI content readiness check.
You are optimising a listing for Etsy search. Etsy is not Google. It is a
different search engine with its own ranking system, its own fields and its
own limits, and advice written for a website does not transfer. Work only
inside the fields I give you.
Rules you must follow:
1. Do not assume any field limit. Work to the limits I paste below, which I
copied from my own listing form today. If I have not given you a limit for
a field, write the content anyway and mark it "limit not supplied, check
the form before saving" rather than inventing a number.
2. Every tag and every attribute value must describe something the product
genuinely is. If a tag would pull in a shopper who would not buy this
item, leave the slot empty and say why. On a marketplace what happens
after the click is part of how the listing is judged, so a slot filled
badly is worse than a slot left open.
3. Write the title for one person scanning a grid of thumbnails on a phone.
Say what the thing is in the first few words. Do not stack synonyms, do
not repeat a word to give it weight, and do not open with gift phrases or
with subjective words like beautiful, unique or perfect.
4. Do not tell me this will rank, or by how much, or where. You cannot see
Etsy results, my competitors, my conversion rate or my shop history. If a
recommendation depends on any of those, say what you would need instead of
estimating it.
5. Use my words and my buyers words. Where you introduce a term I did not
give you, mark it inferred and say what you inferred it from. Do not
invent materials, dimensions, techniques, occasions or origins.
6. Tags and attributes are different jobs. Attributes are a fixed list Etsy
offers for my category and I can only choose from what my form shows, so
name the attribute you would set and tell me to confirm the option exists
rather than inventing one.
7. If what I have told you is too thin to write a title that separates this
item from any other item of the same type, refuse to write it. Ask me for
the three specifics that would fix it.
Output one block per listing in exactly this shape, and no tables:
CURRENT: my existing title, quoted.
WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS: one plain sentence, built only from what I told you.
TITLE: the proposed title.
FIRST FIVE WORDS: quoted, with one line on why a shopper scanning would stop.
TAGS: one per line, each marked (mine) or (inferred from ...). Stop at the
number of tag slots I told you I have. If you cannot fill them honestly,
stop early and say how many you left empty and why.
ATTRIBUTES TO SET: the field and the value, each marked "confirm this option
exists in my form".
DESCRIPTION OPENING: the two sentences a shopper sees before they expand,
answering what is this and will it suit me.
DO NOT DO: the two things I would be tempted to try on this listing that
would make it worse.
MISSING: the facts only I can supply.
After the blocks, give me one list of every term you inferred rather than
took from me, so I can approve or delete them in a single pass.
Constraints:
- No search volume figures for Etsy. There is no public source for them and I
have not given you any.
- Do not present Etsy ranking as a weighted formula. If you refer to how the
search works, say plainly that it is published guidance and not something
you measured.
- Do not reuse phrasing from any competitor listing I paste. Use it only to
show me which words are already saturated.
My product, in my own words: [WHAT IT IS, WHAT IT IS MADE OF, WHO BUYS IT]
My current listing: [PASTE THE CURRENT TITLE, TAGS AND ATTRIBUTES]
Field limits from my form today: [TAG SLOTS, TITLE LIMIT, ANYTHING ELSE THE FORM SHOWS]
Words my buyers use: [FROM REVIEWS, MESSAGES OR CUSTOM REQUESTS, OR "none yet"]What to change
Everything in square brackets is yours to replace. Nothing else needs editing.
[WHAT IT IS, WHAT IT IS MADE OF, WHO BUYS IT]- The physical item in plain words with a buyer attached. "Hand thrown stoneware mug, 350ml, matte glaze, bought mostly as a wedding present" produces a different listing from "ceramic mug", because the first one contains the facts rule 2 needs to fill a tag slot honestly and the second one contains nothing to be specific about.
[PASTE THE CURRENT TITLE, TAGS AND ATTRIBUTES]- Copy the live listing exactly, including the tags you are embarrassed by. This is what the output is compared against, so a rewrite from nothing gives you no way to see what changed. If the listing is new and empty, write "new listing" and expect the missing section to be long.
[TAG SLOTS, TITLE LIMIT, ANYTHING ELSE THE FORM SHOWS]- Open the listing editor and read the numbers off the fields themselves, for example "13 tag slots, title counter stops at the length the form allows". Marketplace limits change and articles about them go stale, so the form in front of you is the only source worth pasting. This is the input that makes rule 1 work.
[FROM REVIEWS, MESSAGES OR CUSTOM REQUESTS, OR "none yet"]- The phrases real buyers typed at you, copied without tidying. "Is this microwave safe", "did you have this in sage", "for my sisters hen do" are the vocabulary shoppers search with, and they are the difference between tags you chose and tags your market chose. Write "none yet" on a new shop and the output will lean harder on your own description.
How to run it
- 01Copy the field limits off your own listing form
Open the listing editor and read the limits from the fields themselves rather than from any article, including this one. Marketplace rules change without warning and a prompt written to a stale number produces copy that will not save. Paste what the form shows and the model works to your reality rather than its memory.
- 02Collect the words your buyers used on you
Go through reviews, messages and custom order requests and copy the phrases people actually typed, spelling mistakes included. These are the only real keyword data you own for a marketplace, because Etsy does not publish search volumes and no model can supply them. Ten honest phrases beat a hundred invented ones.
- 03Run one listing at a time
Paste the prompt with all four inputs filled in and give it a single product. Feeding it your whole shop at once is how you get thirty listings that share a sentence, which is the exact problem you are trying to solve. One listing per run also keeps the missing section short enough to act on.
- 04Delete every inferred term you cannot defend
Read the inferred list at the bottom before you read anything else. Any term you cannot point at a real feature for comes out, no matter how good the tag looks. A tag that wins a click from someone who then leaves is worse for the listing than the empty slot it filled.
- 05Set the attributes in the form, not in the document
Attributes are chosen from a fixed list Etsy offers for your category, so the model can only suggest them and you have to confirm each one exists. Work through the ATTRIBUTES TO SET lines in the editor and drop anything the form does not offer. This is the step people skip and it is the part of the listing that is genuinely structured data.
- 06Check the product page on the site you own
If you also sell the same items from your own domain, run one of those product pages through the structured data checker. A listing on a marketplace builds the marketplace entity, and a product page with no Product or Organisation entity gives an assistant no reason to name you rather than the platform. That page is the only asset in this exercise you actually control.
Questions people ask
What is the best ChatGPT prompt for Etsy SEO?
One that takes the field limits from your own listing form instead of assuming them, and that is allowed to leave a tag slot empty. Most Etsy prompts fill every slot because they were asked to, which produces tags describing an item you do not sell. Constraining the model to your words, your buyers words and the limits on screen today is what turns generic marketplace advice into a listing you can save.
How many tags should an Etsy listing have?
Etsy's own seller handbook currently tells sellers to use all thirteen tag slots and treats an unused slot as a missed chance to match a search. Check the number against your live listing form before writing to it, because marketplace limits change and an article is always a snapshot. The more useful rule is the one the prompt enforces: fill a slot only when the tag is genuinely true of the item.
Does Etsy SEO work the same way as Google SEO?
No, and treating them as the same is the most common mistake. Etsy ranks listings using its own signals, including how well an individual listing tends to do when shoppers see it, alongside the fields you fill in. There are no meta descriptions, no backlinks in the Google sense and no title tag conventions to borrow. The fields are the whole surface, which is why the prompt refuses to work outside them.
Can ChatGPT tell me which Etsy keywords get searched?
No. Etsy does not publish search volumes, no third party has a verified feed of them, and a model asked for numbers anyway will produce plausible ones. Use the model for phrasing, grouping and honesty checks, and use your own reviews, messages and Etsy's search suggestions for the words themselves.
Should I rewrite all my listings at once?
Change a small batch and leave the rest alone for now. A marketplace listing accumulates history, and rewriting everything on the same day removes your ability to tell which change did anything. It also risks applying one bad assumption across a whole shop, which is exactly what the inferred term list exists to catch.
