pillar pages
Pillar page examples: build the hub only when the topic needs one
Practical pillar page examples for services, education and product categories, with a framework for choosing scope and building useful topic clusters.

A pillar page is a hub because people need the hub, not because a content diagram has a large circle in the middle. It should answer the broad question well enough to be useful and send readers to narrower pages exactly where a narrower job begins.
Example 1: a technical SEO pillar
Pillar: Technical SEO checklist
Shared decisions on the pillar: Can the site be crawled, rendered, indexed and understood? What order should checks happen in?
Supporting pages: robots.txt examples, canonical tags, XML sitemaps, hreflang, structured data and Core Web Vitals.
The pillar explains the sequence and gives each check a short usable treatment. It links to a canonical guide when the reader needs implementation patterns. The canonical guide links back when explaining where canonicalisation sits in a complete audit.
This works because the broad query represents an ordered job. The page is more than a list of links, but it does not paste six complete guides together.
Example 2: a service pillar
Pillar: Commercial landscaping services
Shared decisions: Service fit, geography, project types, process, insurance and how to request a site visit.
Supporting pages: grounds maintenance, planting, irrigation, winter services and sector pages for schools or business parks.
The central service page should contain enough proof to stand alone. The narrower page earns its URL only when the service, evidence, buyer questions or delivery process genuinely differs. Replacing two nouns in the same template does not make a cluster.
Example 3: an ecommerce category pillar
Pillar: Running shoes
Shared decisions: Fit, terrain, support, cushioning and a filterable product set.
Supporting pages: trail shoes, road shoes, stability shoes, sizing help and care advice.
Here the pillar may be a category page rather than an article. Products and filters do most of the work; editorial copy helps the shopper choose without pushing the inventory below a long essay. “Pillar page” describes the role in the site, not a required template.
Define the boundary before the outline
Write three lines:
- This pillar helps [audience] decide [broad job].
- It covers [shared decisions].
- It hands off when the reader needs [specialised jobs].
If the handoffs are unrelated, the topic is too broad. If there are no handoffs, you may need one excellent article rather than a cluster.
Search results help reveal boundaries, but shared words are not enough. “SEO report template” and “SEO audit report” overlap in vocabulary while representing different immediate outputs. A cluster should follow jobs and relationships, not a keyword tool’s visual grouping alone.
Internal links that make the structure real
A diagram in a planning deck does not create a cluster. Links do.
From the pillar, link at the point where a supporting page becomes the better answer: “If two versions of a page compete, compare the signals in the canonical tag guide.” Avoid a giant related-articles block as the only connection.
From supporting pages, link back with context that restores the wider task: “Canonical tags are one part of the technical SEO checklist.” The anchor can vary naturally while preserving the relationship.
Cross-link supporting pages when the reader’s next step is obvious. A sitemap guide may lead to indexability; a title-tag guide does not automatically need a link to every other on-page article.
Signs you do not need another cluster page
- The proposed page repeats the pillar’s answer at greater length but adds no distinct decision.
- The only difference is a city name without local service detail.
- No existing page has a natural sentence from which to link to it.
- The query has the same intent and likely destination as an existing URL.
- Maintaining the page would duplicate facts, prices or instructions stored elsewhere.
Merge in those cases. A smaller site with clear ownership usually beats a large site with several near-identical answers.
Measure the hub as a route, not just an entrance
Track whether visitors reach the supporting pages, whether cluster pages receive impressions for their intended jobs and whether important pages remain orphaned. A pillar can succeed by routing a visitor even when it is not the final conversion page.
Use the internal linking prompt after mapping the intended relationships. It can find candidate links; an editor still decides whether the destination helps at that sentence.
Questions people ask
What is a pillar page?
A pillar page is the useful central page for a broad topic. It answers the main question, routes readers to narrower supporting pages and receives contextual links back from those pages. It is a navigation and scope decision, not simply a long article.
How long should a pillar page be?
There is no required word count. It should cover the decisions shared by the whole topic while leaving specialised procedures and edge cases to supporting pages. If every section is only a link, it is a directory; if every section is exhaustive, the supporting pages have no job.
How many cluster pages should link to a pillar page?
As many as genuinely belong to the topic. A coherent cluster of five pages is more useful than 30 loosely related posts. Each supporting page should have a clear reason to link to the pillar in context.
Do pillar pages improve SEO?
They can improve discovery, internal linking and topical clarity when they organise content readers actually need. Publishing a large generic page and manufacturing thin supporting posts does not create authority by itself.
