What is answer engine optimization?
Older than the AI chatbots, and with a cost attached that nobody selling it mentions first. What an answer engine wants, and what winning one takes away from you.
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring content so it becomes the single answer a system reads back, rather than one of ten links. It predates AI chatbots: featured snippets and voice assistants were answer engines first. What is new is that the answer is now written rather than extracted.
- Short for
- Answer engine optimization. Usually written AEO.
- Older than AI
- Featured snippets and voice assistants made this a discipline years before chatbots.
- The unit
- One answer. Not a list. There is no second place in a spoken result.
- The trade off
- Winning the answer often means losing the click. That is the honest headline.
An answer engine is not a new idea
A search engine returns a list and lets you choose. An answer engine picks one and tells you. The distinction is what the whole discipline turns on, and it long predates the current wave of assistants.
Google's featured snippet, the boxed result that answers a question above the ordinary listings, was already reshaping how people wrote pages a decade ago. The industry called the slot position zero, and the techniques for winning it were recognisably what AEO teaches today: ask the question as a heading, answer it immediately underneath, keep the answer short enough to lift whole.
Voice made it stricter. When Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant reads a result aloud there is no second result, no list to scan and no way to signal that you were nearly right. That was the moment the discipline had to accept that being the answer is a binary outcome rather than a good position.
What the AI assistants changed is not the shape of the problem but the mechanism. The answer used to be extracted, lifted verbatim out of one page. It is now generated, written fresh from several sources at once. That single change is what separates AEO from the newer discipline of GEO, and it is why both terms exist rather than one.
What an answer engine needs from a page
The requirements are unusually concrete for a marketing discipline, because the system doing the reading is mechanical. Four things do most of the work.
The question, written as the heading
Phrased the way a person asks it rather than the way a brand names it. "How much does an AI visibility audit cost" is a heading. "Pricing philosophy" is not. The heading is what the retrieval step matches against.
The answer immediately underneath, and short
Forty to sixty words, no preamble, the question answered in the first clause. If the answer only makes sense after two paragraphs of context, it cannot be lifted, and a passage that cannot be lifted cannot be the answer.
Passages that stand up alone
Each answer has to survive being cut out of the page and read with nothing around it. Sentences that begin "as we saw above" or "this is why it matters" break the moment they are extracted, which is the most common self inflicted AEO problem in otherwise good writing.
Structure a parser can trust
FAQPage schema on genuine question and answer pairs, tables for comparisons, ordered lists for sequences. Not because schema is magic, but because it removes the guessing: it tells the parser which text is the question and which is the answer instead of making it infer both.
The zero click problem, stated plainly
Here is the part most pages selling AEO put at the bottom, if they include it at all. Winning the answer frequently costs you the visit. If the assistant reads your answer aloud or prints it in full, the user has what they came for and no reason to click through.
This is a real trade and it is worth being clear eyed about which side of it you are on. For a publisher paid by pageviews, being the extracted answer to a factual question can be close to a pure loss. For a business whose buyers ask comparison and decision questions, being named as the recommendation is worth considerably more than the visit would have been, because the recommendation arrives with the machine's credibility attached to it.
The practical response is not to write worse answers so people have to click. That fails on both sides: the engine stops using you and the reader resents you. The response is to choose which questions you compete for. Answer the questions where being the answer is the win, and where the full answer genuinely requires your tool, your data or your judgement, make the page the place that work happens rather than a description of it.
It is also why AEO is measured differently from classic SEO, and why a traffic report alone will read as a failure even when the work is succeeding. The section on measurement below is about exactly that mismatch.
AEO compared with GEO and with classic SEO
Three overlapping disciplines that are genuinely distinct at the level of what counts as winning. Most engagements need all three, which is a separate point from them being the same thing.
| Classic SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you win | A position in a list | The answer, extracted | A mention inside a written answer |
| Typical surface | Ten blue links | Featured snippets, voice, AI Overviews | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity |
| Answer comes from | The user clicking through | One page, lifted verbatim | Several sources, synthesised |
| How many winners | Ten per page, and page two exists | One. There is no runner up | Several sources cited per answer |
| What it rewards | Relevance, links, technical health | Concise, self contained, well structured answers | Corroboration, citations, quotable structure |
| Effect on your traffic | Clicks go up | Clicks can go down while visibility goes up | Mixed, and hard to attribute at all |
| Age of the discipline | Since the late 1990s | Since featured snippets and voice, roughly a decade | Named in a 2024 research paper |
The overlap is real and it is mostly in the foundation. A page that is reachable, renders without JavaScript, answers its own heading and carries correct schema is doing well by all three at once. They diverge in what you then chase, and in what counts as having won.
How to do AEO on a page you already have
This discipline rewards editing more than publishing. Most sites already own the pages that should be winning answers and have written them in a shape nothing can extract.
- 01
Find the questions you are already close on
Pull the queries where you rank between roughly four and fifteen and that are phrased as questions. Those are the pages an answer engine has already found and declined to use, which makes them far cheaper to win than anything new.
- 02
Rewrite the heading as the question
Match the phrasing people actually type, not internal vocabulary. This is usually a one line change and it is the single highest leverage edit in AEO, because it is what the retrieval step matches on.
- 03
Put a 40 to 60 word answer directly beneath it
Before the context, before the caveats, before the reason the question is interesting. Write it so it reads correctly when cut out of the page entirely, then check it does by reading it on its own. Our content readiness checker scores exactly this.
- 04
Break the references to the rest of the page
Search your answer paragraphs for "as mentioned above", "this", "these" and "that" used to point at something out of frame. Each one is a passage that breaks on extraction. Replacing the pronoun with the noun is usually the whole fix.
- 05
Mark up genuine question and answer pairs
FAQPage schema where the page really does ask and answer questions, never as a wrapper around marketing copy shaped like a question. Check it parses with the structured data checker, because schema that fails to validate is silently ignored rather than flagged.
- 06
Decide what the click is still for
If the extracted answer is complete, give the reader a reason to arrive anyway: the tool that does the thing, the data behind the claim, the calculator, the full table. This is the step that turns a zero click win into a business result rather than a vanity one.
How AEO is measured, and why traffic is the wrong number
The trap is measuring AEO by sessions. A page that wins the featured snippet for its question can see impressions rise and clicks fall at the same time, which reads as a regression in every standard report and is in fact the discipline working exactly as designed.
Three numbers are worth watching instead. Answer ownership: for your target questions, are you the snippet, the cited source in an AI Overview, the voice result. Impressions against position: rising impressions with flat clicks at position one or two is the signature of an answer being consumed in place. And assisted outcomes: whether the people who do arrive convert better, which they usually do, because a visitor who clicks after reading your answer has already been pre sold by a machine.
For the AI surfaces specifically the unit is the same one GEO uses: a fixed prompt set, asked on a fixed cadence, recorded. Generated answers vary between identical asks, so a single check tells you nothing and a rate over months tells you a good deal. The difference from GEO is what you are counting. GEO asks whether you were named at all; AEO asks whether the answer given was yours.
And the deterministic half is checkable by anybody at any time, which is why it is worth doing first: whether the heading is the question, whether the answer sits directly under it, whether it survives extraction, whether the schema parses. None of that varies between two asks.

Questions people ask about AEO
What does AEO stand for?
Answer engine optimization, sometimes written answer engine optimisation. An answer engine is any system that returns a single answer instead of a list of links: a featured snippet, a voice assistant, an AI Overview or a chatbot. AEO is the practice of making your content the one it picks.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
No. AEO is about being the specific answer to a specific question, and it covers featured snippets and voice results that have nothing to do with AI. GEO is about being named and cited inside an answer that a model writes from several sources at once. The clearest way to hold them apart: AEO wants your passage lifted whole, GEO wants your brand mentioned in something newly written. Our GEO explainer covers the other half.
Does AEO still matter now that everything is AI?
More than before, and for an unglamorous reason. AI Overviews and assistants draw on the same structural signals that featured snippets rewarded, so the work compounds rather than being replaced. A page already written to be extracted is most of the way to being written to be quoted.
Will AEO reduce my traffic?
It can, and any page that tells you otherwise is selling something. If an engine reads your complete answer aloud, the user has no reason to click. Whether that is a loss depends on your model: for a pageview funded publisher it can be close to a pure cost, and for a business being named as the recommendation it is usually worth more than the visit. Choose the questions you compete for accordingly.
How do I optimise for featured snippets?
Ask the question as a heading in the words people use, answer it in 40 to 60 words directly underneath with no preamble, make sure the passage reads correctly on its own, and use a list or table where the question implies a sequence or a comparison. Then confirm the page renders without JavaScript, because a snippet cannot be taken from text the crawler never received.
Do I need FAQ schema for AEO?
It helps and it is not the mechanism. Schema removes ambiguity about which text is the question and which is the answer, which makes extraction more reliable. It cannot make a badly structured answer extractable, and marking up marketing copy shaped like questions is a well known way to have the markup ignored. Structure the page first, then describe it.
