01 Know whether an answer box exists on the query at all
Sold as rank trackingBefore anything else: does this query even produce an extracted answer, a People Also Ask block or a knowledge panel? On plenty of commercial queries it does not, and optimising for a surface that is not there is the most common wasted effort in this discipline.
What does it. A rank tracker that records SERP features alongside the position. This is ordinary rank tracking with the feature data kept rather than discarded, which most trackers collect and few surface.
02 Know whether the answer currently shown is yours
Sold as rank trackingIf a box exists, somebody is in it. Being third organically while a competitor owns the snippet above you is a specific, checkable, fixable situation, and it is invisible in a report that only carries positions.
What does it. The same tracker, reading which domain holds the feature. Checkable and fairly stable, unlike a generated answer, which varies between runs and has to be reported as a rate.
03 Make the passage extractable
Not sold as a productAn extracted answer is lifted verbatim from one page. That requires a passage that answers one question, in one place, that makes sense with nothing above it. Most pages fail this not through bad writing but through structure: the answer is distributed across four paragraphs.
What does it. A passage level content check. Our engine scores this as answer extractability and weights it heavily. Very little else in the category measures it at all, and no product is sold specifically for it.
04 Make the markup unambiguous
Sold as schema testingValid structured data that matches the visible page, a machine readable date, and an author. These do not win a snippet on their own and their absence makes you a worse candidate than an otherwise identical page.
What does it. A structured data validator plus freshness and attribution checks. Free, mechanical, and available everywhere including here.
