title tag examples

Title tags are labels for destinations. Their first job is to tell the truth about the page; their second is to make the useful difference visible before the result runs out of room.

Title tag examples

Weak Better Why
Home Ceramic planters handmade in Bristol Names the product and genuine difference
Services Technical SEO audits for SaaS sites Identifies service and fit
Ultimate SEO guide 2026 On-page SEO: a practical checklist Removes an unsupported superlative and disposable year
Blog post How to write alt text for functional images Names the exact problem the article solves

Do not add a year merely to look current. A date is useful when the page is maintained as a dated edition and its contents genuinely changed. Otherwise it becomes a promise to update the title forever.

Use the SERP snippet preview on the final pair. The preview does not predict a rewrite, but it will show whether you buried the only useful words at the end.

The prompt 217 words
Write 12 title tag options for this existing page.

First state the page subject in five words or fewer and quote the line from
the page that proves it. If the query and page subject do not match, stop and
say MISMATCH instead of forcing the query into a title.

Create three groups of four:
1. Query first.
2. Differentiator first.
3. Natural sentence.

Requirements:
- Preserve the page’s real subject and intent.
- Put the useful difference before likely truncation.
- Aim for 45 to 60 characters, but never remove necessary meaning merely to
  hit a count.
- Add the exact character count including spaces.
- Add the brand only when it fits naturally; never shorten the subject to
  make room for the brand.
- Use normal sentence or title case consistently with the brand.
- No pipes or dashes unless they separate genuinely different information.
- Do not invent “best”, “free”, a year, a location, a price or a number.

Then choose three finalists and show each beside the page H1. Explain whether
the pair is helpfully different or confusingly different. Finish with one
meta description for the strongest factual angle, no more than 155
characters, without repeating the title word for word.

H1 and opening: [PAGE]
Primary query: [QUERY]
Verified differentiator: [DIFFERENCE]
Brand: [BRAND]

What to change

Everything in square brackets is yours to replace. Nothing else needs editing.

[PAGE]
Paste the H1 and first paragraph. They establish what the page can honestly be called.
[QUERY]
The primary query assigned to this URL, not every keyword in the cluster.
[DIFFERENCE]
A fact the searcher would care about: tested on 20 tools, includes a template, same-day service. Leave blank rather than inventing one.
[BRAND]
The short brand name. The prompt treats it as optional when space is better spent on meaning.

How to run it

  1. 01
Start with the page, not the keyword

Paste the H1 and opening so the model has a truth boundary. A query that does not match should trigger MISMATCH, not a misleading rewrite.

  2. 02
Read title and H1 as a pair

They do not need to match exactly. They do need to describe the same destination so the click does not feel like a switch.

  3. 03
    Preview rather than count alone

Character counts are a guardrail, not a display measurement. Use a snippet preview and make sure the meaningful words appear early.

Questions people ask

What is an example of a good title tag?

For a page comparing measured prices, “AI visibility tool pricing: 12 plans compared” is specific and supportable when the page really compares 12 plans. “Best affordable AI SEO tools” introduces judgments the page may not prove.

How long should a title tag be?

There is no guaranteed character limit because results are displayed by width and may be rewritten. About 45 to 60 characters is a useful drafting range, but put the topic and meaningful difference early rather than cutting essential words to hit a number.

Should the title tag and H1 be the same?

They may be, but they do not have to be identical. The title can be a compact search label while the H1 reads naturally on the page. Both should promise the same content.
