A snippet-shaped block is useful even when Google never selects it. The same self-contained passage is easier for a reader, a search result and an assistant to quote correctly.
Choose the shape from the question
A definition needs a subject, category and distinguishing feature in a short paragraph. A procedure needs ordered steps whose sequence matters. A set of options needs bullets only when order does not matter. A comparison needs consistent columns; prose hides the dimensions a reader is trying to compare. Do not force every answer into a numbered list because lists are visually obvious.
The first block must survive extraction. Repeat the named subject, state necessary units and avoid “this”, “it” or “the above” when the referent would disappear outside the page. Keep qualifications that change the answer inside the block. Move history, examples and secondary exceptions to the explanation that follows.
Selection is not guaranteed
Correct formatting does not entitle a page to a featured snippet. Google chooses and can rewrite search features dynamically. The controllable job is to publish the clearest supported answer on a page that genuinely serves the query. Measure impressions, clicks and the live result over time rather than treating one screenshot as permanent ownership.
Finally, compare the short block with the full article. If it overstates the evidence to fit the word range, keep the accurate longer answer. Extractability is useful only when the extracted passage remains true.
