AI Overviews

Why your AI Overview disappeared, and whether to worry

AI Overviews vanish from queries constantly, and it is usually the feature working as designed. How to tell a normal disappearance from a real problem on your site.

Four ways an AI Overview disappears, each labelled with whether the cause is on your own site: gone for the query entirely, overview present but you are not cited, a competitor replaced you, and gone across many queries at once

Your AI Overview was there last week and today it is not. Before you change anything on the site, the likeliest explanation is that nothing is wrong: Google states that AI Overviews are shown only when its systems judge them additive to classic Search, and that they often do not trigger at all. Triggering is a per query decision that moves.

That does not mean every disappearance is benign. There are three genuinely different things people mean by “my AI Overview disappeared”, they have different causes, and the diagnosis takes about five minutes.

First, work out which thing actually happened

These get conflated constantly, and the fix is different for each.

What you observed What it means Is it about your site
The overview is gone for the query entirely Google stopped triggering one for that query No
The overview is there, your page is not cited You were not selected this time Partly
The overview is there, a competitor replaced you Another source answered the sub question better Yes
Overviews gone across many of your queries at once Usually a site level access or indexing change Yes, and urgently

Search the query signed out in an incognito window. If no overview appears for anybody, stop: there is nothing on your site to fix, and the hours people spend rewriting a page in this situation are hours spent on a page Google is not currently summarising.

The boring reason, which is most of them

Triggering is not stable and was never promised to be. Google’s own documentation says overviews “are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don’t trigger”. That judgement varies by query, by country, by device and over time as the systems update.

So the base rate of disappearance is high, and it is high for everyone. A query that showed an overview in March and does not in August has not necessarily changed in any way you could have influenced. If you are tracking a set of queries weekly you will watch overviews come and go on the same terms repeatedly, which is the normal texture of this feature rather than a series of incidents.

This is also why a screenshot is not evidence. One check on one day, signed in, on one device, in one country, is a single sample of something that varies on all four of those axes.

The reasons that are about you, in the order worth checking

If the overview is present and you are not in it, or if overviews vanished across many queries at once, work down this list. It is ordered by how common the cause is and how cheap it is to rule out.

1. Snippet suppression, including by accident

Being eligible for an AI Overview requires being indexed and allowed to show a snippet. Google names nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as the controls that limit what appears. A tight max-snippet value, or a data-nosnippet wrapped around the exact block worth quoting, removes you from the summary while leaving the page ranking normally, which is precisely the shape of “we disappeared and nothing else changed”.

These arrive from unexpected places: a consent or paywall plugin adding data-nosnippet, a template change that wraps the answer in a suppressed div, a max-snippet set years ago to control classic snippet length. Check the rendered HTML rather than the source you think you shipped, with the indexability checker.

2. Crawler access changed

A robots.txt edit, a CDN rule, a security plugin, a staging config promoted to production. The overview runs on the ordinary Google index via Googlebot, so if Googlebot lost access the whole page goes, not just the summary. The robots.txt checker and the AI crawler checker cover this in about a minute between them.

One specific mistake worth naming because it is common and backwards: blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews, and unblocking it does not put you back. That directive governs training and grounding in some of Google’s other AI products. AI Overviews is Search, governed by ordinary Googlebot access and snippet controls.

3. The page started rendering client side

A framework upgrade, a change to how a component hydrates, a move to a new CMS. If the answer now arrives only after JavaScript runs, the crawler receives a shell, and a shell cannot be quoted. This one is invisible in a browser and obvious to the render gap checker.

4. Somebody answered the sub question better

The overview is there, it is citing three sources, and one of them used to be you. This is the honest, slow one.

Google composes overviews using query fan out, issuing several narrower related searches and building the answer from what comes back. You are not competing for the query the reader typed; you are competing for a sub question you never see. A competitor publishing a page that answers one of those sub questions in a cleaner, more liftable passage takes the slot without outranking you on anything.

The query fan out prompt reconstructs a plausible set of those sub questions and marks which ones your site currently answers, which is the fastest way to find the one you lost.

5. The page went stale in a way a machine can see

Freshness signals are read, and a page whose last modified date is two years old competes badly against one updated last month on a topic where currency matters. This is not a reason to fake a date, which our own engine flags as a manufactured recency signal, and it is a reason to genuinely revisit a page you still care about.

What not to do

Do not rewrite the page immediately. Confirm the overview still triggers for the query at all first. Most of the panicked rewriting in this category is done on queries where Google simply stopped showing a summary.

Do not add an llms.txt to fix it. Google states explicitly that no AI text file and no special structured data is required to appear in its AI features. The file has other arguments and this is not one of them.

Do not buy a tool to tell you it happened. Not yet. Establish whether you clear the eligibility floor first, because that is free and it is where the fixable causes are. A tracker that reports the disappearance you already noticed has told you nothing you did not know.

Do not treat one check as a measurement. Track presence across a set of queries over weeks. Coming and going is the normal behaviour of this feature, and only a run of readings distinguishes a trend from the ordinary flicker.

The five minute version

  1. Search the query signed out. No overview for anyone? Stop, nothing to fix.
  2. Overview present, you absent? Check snippet suppression and indexability.
  3. Gone across many queries at once? Check Googlebot access and rendering first.
  4. Still eligible and still absent? You lost a sub question, not a ranking. Reconstruct the fan out.
  5. Whatever the answer, log it and re-check in a week rather than acting on one sample.

A free audit covers steps two and three across your whole site in a couple of minutes, which is the mechanical part. Step four is the actual work and no tool does it for you.

If you want the feature itself explained rather than this specific failure, what Google AI Overviews are and how they work covers what triggers one, which controls govern it and how it differs from AI Mode. Questions people ask

Why did my AI Overview disappear?

Almost always because Google decided an overview was not additive for that query on that day. Google documents that AI Overviews are only shown when its systems determine they add something beyond classic Search, and says plainly that they often do not trigger. Triggering is a per query judgement that changes over time, by country and by device, so an overview vanishing is usually the feature working rather than a penalty against your site.

Is a disappearing AI Overview a Google penalty?

No. There is no penalty that removes a site from AI Overviews specifically. If your page is gone but the overview is still there, you were not selected this time. If the overview itself is gone for everybody, Google changed its mind about the query. Neither is a manual action and neither shows up in Search Console as one.

How do I tell whether the overview is gone for everyone or just for me?

Search the query signed out, in an incognito window, and check whether an overview appears at all. If it does and you are not in it, your problem is selection. If it does not appear for anyone, the feature stopped triggering for that query and there is nothing on your site to fix. Repeat it over several days, because a single check is one sample.

Can I get my page back into an AI Overview?

There is no resubmission and no placement to buy. What you can do is check that you still clear the documented eligibility floor, which is being indexed and allowed to show a snippet, and then make the passage more liftable than the one Google used instead. Both are checkable, and the second is the slower half.

Do AI Overviews change often?

Yes, and that is the single most important thing to understand before reacting to one. The same query can show an overview on one day and not the next, with different sources when it does. Tracking presence weekly across a set of your own queries tells you something. Screenshotting one query on one day tells you almost nothing.
